Smart Banners

Updated over a month ago

At a Glance: This article focuses on how the user can create smart banners and convert their website visitors into mobile app users

Overview

Smart Banners enable seamless web-to-app attribution by displaying a banner on your website. When a visitor clicks on the banner, they are automatically redirected to the appropriate app store if the app is not installed or to a specific in-app location if the app is already installed.

The banner tracks three important KPIs:

  • Impressions: Counted when the banner is loaded.

  • Clicks: Tracked when a user clicks the banner.

  • Installs: Recorded if the click results in an app installation.

Example Use Case:

If you run a goods and services delivery business and want to convert website visitors into app users, Smart Banners are the perfect tool. Powered by UniLinks, these banners automatically direct mobile users to the correct app store or landing page, making the installation process smooth and simple.

Setup Flow

Before setting up Smart Banners, ensure you have at least one UniLink template ready. The recommended setup flow is:

Website Workspace → Banner Group → Banner/Template

Workplace setup

Start by creating a website Workspace — the specific website where you will place the Smart Banners.

Smart Banners

Once the workspace is created, a code snippet is generated. You’ll need to place this snippet within your website’s HTML or configure it via Google Tag Manager.

For managing multiple websites, additional workspaces can be created by navigating to the Studio and using the options menu (three dots). You can edit, delete, or retrieve the code snippet anytime.

Banner Group

  • A banner group can have multiple banners and will have a single unilink template associated with it. To create a banner group, go inside the workplace and click on the "Add banner group" button.

    Smart Banners

  • Give a name to your banner group and select an appropriate template among the created ones for Unilink.

  • Set URI scheme for the banner group as a fallback for Universal Links and Android App Links users

    Smart Banners

  • Set the primary and fallback Attributed sources to be attributed with new installs coming from this banner group.

  • Attributed Source

    a) Incoming attribution parameters: If the PID parameter is available in the incoming Apptrove attribution link, all parameters on the incoming link are added to the link on the Smart Banner.

    b) UTM parameters: If a UTM_source parameter is available in the incoming link, the UTM_source and UTM_campaign parameters are added to the link on the Smart Banner.

    c) Additional attribution parameters: If you want, add additional attribution data. This enables granular analysis of every install.

  • Turn on Retargeting if you plan to use the banner group to record re-engagements performed by users clicking on the banner

  • Set the behaviour for banners:

    a) Dismissal: Minimum time allowed between a user's dismissal of one banner in the group, until the same banner may be displayed again to the user.

    Smart Banners

  • Locations are regions, countries, or states. Select “Worldwide” to display this banner group to all users in all locations. If needed, exclude visitors coming from different locations.

  • Click “Specific location” to display this banner group to users from one or more locations that you choose.

  • Set the pages on which the banner will be displayed. The user can choose either all the pages or some specific pages

    a) Specific page: Specify the host and/or path of the page on which to display the banner. Any queries entered will be disregarded.
