Click Cap Rules & Blocked Click Redirects

Control non-organic click traffic by setting hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly click caps for agencies and partners in Apptrove.

Overview

Click Cap Rules allow you to limit the number of non-organic click redirects generated through Apptrove. You can configure click limits for:

  • Individual partners

  • Agencies (by selecting one, multiple, or all partners under that agency)

Once a configured limit is reached, Apptrove automatically blocks any additional clicks until the selected cap window resets.

This helps advertisers control traffic volume, reduce invalid traffic, and protect campaigns from abnormal click spikes.

Limit click traffic for your agencies and partners to prevent unexpected traffic spikes.

Before you begin

Click Cap Rules apply only to non-organic traffic.

The following traffic is not eligible for click caps:

  • Organic traffic

  • Self-Reporting Networks (SRNs) such as Google Ads and Meta Ads

  • Unattributed traffic

Creating a Click Cap Rule

  • Manage → Cap Rules

  • Click Add Rule.

Step 1: Enter Basic Details

Provide a unique name for the rule.

This name is also displayed in logs and notifications whenever the rule is triggered.

Step 2: Select the Scope

Choose where the click cap should apply.

Agency

Select Agency if you want to limit traffic across partners running under a particular agency.

After selecting an agency, choose:

  • One partner

  • Multiple partners

  • All available partners

Step 3: Select Cap Mode (for Agency type)

When creating a CAP rule, choose how the CAP should be applied.

Each

Each selected partner receives its own individual cap.

For example:

  • Partner A → 10,000 clicks

  • Partner B → 10,000 clicks

  • Partner C → 10,000 clicks

Each partner is evaluated independently.

Group

All selected partners share a common click limit.

For example:

  • Total shared cap → 10,000 clicks

Clicks from every selected partner contribute toward the same limit.

Note: Only the selected partners contribute toward the cap. New partners added to the agency later are not automatically included. You can edit the rule anytime to add them.

Partner

Select Partner if you want to apply the cap to a directly integrated partner.

Only one partner can be selected per rule.

Step 4: Configure Cap Limits

You can define click limits for any combination of the following windows:

  • Hourly

  • Daily

  • Weekly

  • Monthly

You may configure one or multiple cap windows depending on your business requirements. When multiple windows are configured, the first limit reached immediately blocks subsequent clicks until that window resets.

Cap Window

Reset Time

Hourly

Every hour

Daily

Midnight (UTC)

Weekly

Every Monday (UTC)

Monthly

First day of each month (UTC)

Note: At least one cap window must be configured.

Step 5: Redirect Blocked Clicks

When a click exceeds the configured cap, Apptrove blocks the redirect.

Optionally, you can enable Redirect URL to send blocked users to a custom landing page instead of the default response.

Simply:

  • Enable Redirect ON

  • Enter your custom URL

If disabled, blocked clicks are not redirected to any custom page.

Monitoring Click Cap Rules

The Cap Rules page provides a complete overview of every configured rule, including:

  • Rule name

  • Scope(Agency/partner name)

  • Cap type

  • Cap mode

  • Partner name

  • Cap windows

  • Current usage

  • Status (Use the toggle to activate/deactivate a CAP)

  • Creation date

The usage indicator helps you monitor how close each rule is to reaching its configured limit.

Click Logs

Whenever a click is blocked because of a cap rule, the Click Logs display the status as rejected and reason as cap_limit in the click logs.

This makes it easy to identify which cap prevented the redirect.

Blocking Rejected Click Redirects

Apptrove also prevents redirects for clicks that have already been rejected by the fraud detection engine.

If a click is identified as fraudulent or rejected during validation:

  • No redirect is issued

  • The destination URL is not opened.

  • The blocked click is recorded in the Click Logs with the corresponding rejection reason

This behavior is enabled automatically and requires no additional configuration.

Important Notes

  • Click caps apply only to non-organic traffic.

  • Google Ads, Meta Ads, and other Self-Reporting Networks (SRNs) cannot be selected while creating click cap rules.

  • A partner can only belong to one active click cap rule at a time.

  • New partners added to an agency after rule creation must be added manually by editing the rule.

  • You can enable or disable a rule at any time without deleting it.

  • Blocking a click due to a cap does not affect future traffic once the cap window resets.
